with Celeste Starr and her kindergartners
Over the years, I have documented the work of accomplished public school kindergarten teachers. We share a vision of making school a celebrative place and involving families as partners in joyful, authentic teaching and learning.
Here is a favorite year-end celebration. The photos tell the story!
The children sang a medley of songs in sign language, gave āloveā necklaces away to their families, and were given bubbles and a bug catcher.

One of the fathers, a former marine, carried the U.S. flag and helped lead the procession from kindergarten to the park.
Students sang and signed the Pledge of Allegiance to begin the celebration.
Families enjoyed visiting and the relaxed camaraderie of a local park.
Music is magic in accelerating literacy, developing bonds of friendship, and creating magical memories.
